How Do I Decide On a Niche?
Deciding on a niche for your blog will differ depending upon why you are starting a blog in the first place. For instance, if you’re starting a blog simply because you’re interested in a particular topic, then it doesn’t really make sense for you to do a lot of keyword research because you already know what topic you are interested in.
If you love scrapbooking, for example, then your blog is going to be about scrapbooking no matter what your keyword research would turn out.
However, if you’re blogging simply for the “making money” aspect of it then you do need to do some keyword research to find out if your topic is going to get enough interest and traffic to generate an income.
Keyword research can be done in many different ways. For a beginner who doesn’t have a lot of money to invest in fancy keyword tools, the good old-fashioned Google keyword tool is really all you need. If you go to Google and put in the term “Google keyword tool” then you will see the link to the tool.
You simply put in a “seed” keyword and you can get all kinds of suggestions that you can use to build your site and the topics talked about on your site.
For example, if you want to do a blog around the term “weight loss”, you might find it rather difficult to get ranked for that keyword. Obviously, that’s an extremely competitive keyword so it’s going to be harder to rank in the search engines against all of the big websites around you.
So, it might make sense to target some of the “long tail” keywords that may not be getting as many searches per month, but also don’t have as much competition. For example, you might target a keyword like “lose weight after 50” and specialize in that specific market.
